Working Out Can Make You Smarter.

One of my core beliefs is that you need to find balance in everything you do in life. Basically you need to address all aspects of the holistic triangle (physical, mental and spiritual). When you successfully combine these three points you have a balanced human. Simply put, exercising your brain is as important as exercising your body and spiritual side.

Does this mean you have to target each point individually? Maybe not. Maybe you can enhance your cognitive abilities while improving your physical abilities? The idea isn't to far fetched, Yoga is a great example.  Now, the New York Times is supporting this idea by reporting that regular exercise, even walking,” leads to more robust mental abilities".
"but now some scientists are suggesting that physical activity also played a critical role in making our brains larger."
This means that exercising will not only make you look sexy but also can give your brain a boost! Seems like a "win win" to me. Best of all it also hints that not targeted holistic points can be enhanced or served by exercising others!

The next question you need to ask yourself is what am I going to do to achieve this? What is the next step? How am I going to become healthier? Your goals might be different then mine, maybe more or maybe less. That isn't important. What is important is that you follow the practice of stating your mission, defining achievable goals, recording progress and adjusting when needed.

Here are a few suggestions on ways to meet your health goal in the coming year.

  • Set a mission! Maybe it's to get down to x amount of lbs, become healthier, fit into a cretin outfit, finish a degree, read a book. What ever it is, set it as your mission, what you want to accomplish. You don't have to be super specific at this point. You short term goals (see below) will do this for you.

  • Find Support. Not having the right peers or support group can limit the success of your goals considerably. I talk about how you have to go further and surround yourself with people who challenge you mentally, physically and spiritually.
  • Set Small, Achievable Goals. Any goal can be overwhelming if you don't break it down into smaller parts. Setting a goal of losing 100 lbs in the next year is admirable but can be overwhelming. The best thing to do is set lots of smaller goals and concentrate on then one at a time
  • Use Positive Self Talk. It’s easy to beat yourself up when attempting something that is difficult for you. Stick with the positive self talk, which sounds more like “I’m actually doing this!” and “I’m impressed with how well I did, only one mistake today!”
  • Reward Yourself. Go ahead and reward your efforts in working towards your goal! Use smaller rewards at the end of each short-term goal and a great reward for full completion of your goal. The small rewards keep your motivation going.

So what are your health goals?
