Do you have luck?

In the Psychology Today article, "Why You Should Believe in Luck" author Craig Dowden talks about the impact of believing in luck. It's funny but the debate about what luck is, if it is divine or random, has been going on for eons. A quick look at the Wikipedia entry on luck quotes Max Gunther's definition as "events that influence one's life and are seemingly beyond one's control". What if these events, to some part, are not out of your control?

"What was most interesting to me about this research was how the participants’ beliefs about luck impacted their drive for success. People who saw their luck as stable tended to have a significantly higher drive to succeed than those who viewed it as transitory. " - Craig Dowden, Ph.D.

This reminded me of  my "Cosmic or Coincidence: The Value Of Belief" post where I suggest that no matter what the reason, the energy behind the belief can have a positive impact. So it doesn't matter if luck is real or a mystical force because by simply having a positive outlook on your fortune you have a greater chance of altering it's outcome. Think of it as a discipline. By constantly filling your mind with positive thoughts you will train it to act subconsciously in that direction!

What are your thoughts on luck?

Embracing Stupidity: Overcoming Fear and Self-Doubt.

You know the mantra "always find the good in everything"? Well, here is a new way of using it. In his blog post on Fear–Based Decision Making James Clear talks about recognizing when you are making a decision based on fear and gives five suggestions on how to deal with it.

Number two was right on, especially since I have been accused of believing  the world revolves around me! (just ask my wife!). Think about it. Why worry? More then likely they don't care one way or the other!  Don't get me wrong, this statement is probably something that is more of a generalization but defiantly a constructive way of getting over that hesitation.  Don't misunderstand me, you do have people in your life that care like family, friends and teachers but as James points out more then likely they want you to succeed not fail. Eliminate the rest.

Failure is not an option

It's simple to say failure is not an option but the more practical way to approach this is to have a realistic view of your progress and take pride in the small steps. On day three of the new year and running strong. By strong I mean that I went to Kickboxing and Yoga class and immediately felt the negative effects of the holiday season. The biggest thing that I noticed was that I was a bit dehydrated and I didn't have my full balance. Ok, so not the best inversions today but I can live with that.

Working Out Can Make You Smarter.

One of my core beliefs is that you need to find balance in everything you do in life. Basically you need to address all aspects of the holistic triangle (physical, mental and spiritual). When you successfully combine these three points you have a balanced human. Simply put, exercising your brain is as important as exercising your body and spiritual side.
